Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age. The diagnosis is usually made when at least two of three criteria are present: irregular menstrual bleeding, clinical or laboratory evidence of raised androgens (for example excess hair growth or acne), and the ultrasound appearance of “polycystic” ovaries. It is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age and one of the most common causes of infertility.

The most common symptoms are irregular cycles (infrequent or absent periods), difficulty conceiving because ovulation is disrupted, excess hair growth and acne. Many women also have problems with weight or insulin resistance. Symptoms vary a great deal – some women have mild complaints, others more severe ones – which is why individual assessment matters.
The exact cause is not fully understood, but the key factors are genetic predisposition and metabolic disturbance such as insulin resistance, which worsens the overproduction of androgens.
The first steps are usually changes to lifestyle — in women carrying excess weight, losing 5–10% of body weight can significantly restore ovulation. There are also medical approaches to improving ovulation, and if these do not succeed, intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) are considered.
Many women with PCOS conceive successfully, but statistically they are at higher risk of some complications: miscarriage, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and preterm birth. With good medical support, the chances of a healthy pregnancy are high.
